What Can a Mouth Guard Do for Me?

The best mouth guard for you depends on your particular needs.

Bruxism mouth guards/mouth guards for TMJ are night mouth guards to stop you from grinding and clenching your teeth. These mouth guards for clenching prevent tooth sensitivity, wearing your tooth enamel down, having fractured enamel, or cracking your teeth. It keeps your jaw muscles relaxed and helps to prevent jaw joint pain.
Sports mouth guards (impact mouthguards) protect your teeth and lips in case of an accident. They can save you from breaking or losing a tooth during an impact.
Sleep apnea mouth guards/snoring mouth guards are nighttime mouth guards that push the lower jaw forward to keep your airway open while you sleep. You (and your spouse) get a great night’s sleep and your brain gets plenty of oxygen!

The Custom Mouth Guard Process

First Visit

At your first visit for a custom mouth guard you have digital x-rays made, if needed. The dentist examines your teeth and how well you open your mouth and close your mouth. Then the dentist makes impressions of your upper and lower teeth using a mold to create a model of your teeth. Many guards are clear mouth guards, but you may be able to ask for colors or even sparkles if you want a cool mouthguard.
Second Visit

After your dentist creates a custom mouth guard for your teeth, you’ll return to the dental office to have your fitting. Once you and your dentist are satisfied that it fits well and doesn’t cause any breathing issues, you get instructions about how to clean your mouth guard. Then you are all set to play sports more safely or have a great night’s sleep!
